Teacher Bio

“There is only one truth. There are many paths”.
Swami Satchidananda.

Shelley is Authorized to teach the Ashtanga Yoga method by her Teacher R. Sharath Jois of Mysore, India. She is currently the first and only authorized teacher across Hertfordshire and Essex.

Shelley teaches a traditional daily Mysore style self-practice schedule at Ashtanga Yoga Essex, based in Harlow.

From a very young age Shelley was thirsty for knowledge on Spirituality, asking many profound questions and reading many books on philosophy, healing, the paranormal, and the lives of saints.

Her first experience of Yoga was at age 15, when her mother took her to her first Yoga class, she fell in love with it and then Yoga asana practice came in and out of her life over the next several years. She still, however continued consistently with her interest in Spirituality, Healing and Mysticism.

Shelley studied Performing Arts at College and completed a Degree in Contemporary Writing. She has a passion for creative writing and poetry.

Shelley dreamt about going to India during her early twenties but she could not finance it. For the last fifteen years(since 1995) Shelley has been dedicated to a daily Yoga practice, and has remained completely devoted even whilst pregnant with both of her daughters. During the first 10 years she remained self-taught as she had no regular teacher in England, but at every opportunity she would attend Richard Freeman's workshops. She also attended some of John Scott and Alex Medin's workshops.

"Sa tu dirgha-kala-nairantarya-satkarasevito drdha-bhumih."
This practice is firmly grounded when it is performed for a long time without interruption and with zeal.
The Yoga- Sutras of Patanjali 1.14 (Translated by Barbara Stoler Miller)

It was in 2003 that Shelley finally got to meet her teachers, Guruji and Sharath when she attended their world tour in London. Since then, she has attended many more world tours with them. Shelley desperately wanted to get to Mysore, but due to life circumstances she could not, until 2006. Since 2006, Shelley has regularly visited her Teacher in Mysore, India. Shelley feels so blessed to have been able to have attended world tours with Guruji and having been in Guruj's presence during her first 2 visits to Mysore. Shelley is a dedicated student of R. Sharath Jois ( Guruji's grandson) and she is committed to returning to Mysore on a regular basis.

Shelley feels so blessed to have received authoriztion from R. Sharath Jois. This is the only true validation given to teach this method.

In addition to this, Shelley has spent alot of time studying under Richard Freeman's guidance. In 2007 she spent 2 months in America practising under Richard and also completed his 200hr teacher training.

She is a fully qualified, registered and insured Yoga teacher, having also completed a 200hr Yoga Alliance Teacher Training and she has a BSY diploma too. Shelley has been teaching Yoga since 1999.

In 2005 I was priviledged to be asked by highly respected yoga teacher Brian Cooper, to be photographed and featured in the now best selling yoga book “Art of Adjusting” which can be found here at the The Yoga Shop. This has now become the bestselling teaching aid for adjusting students and is aimed at the teacher/advanced student market.

My aim as a Teacher is to teach you the discipline of this practice, in a sacred and traditional way. To learn compassion for yourself and all others. For you to learn to understand your body and it's many patterns.

‘Yoga is a life long practice, it is not a linear path, it is a winding staircase that we go up and down. We often meet obstacles along the way that we feel hinders our journey and then we can find ourselves on the same step for longer than we could have ever imagined. With time, we can learn patience and allow the next step to come to us. Often, the temptation to get to the top as quickly as we can is so great that we skip steps and miss the beauty of the staircase. The staircase cannot be claimed or denied, it exists for all to climb. But only few truly walk it." Shelley Osman
